EU DIRECTIVE DEADLINES

RoHS

Restriction of Hazardous Substances (Electronics/Appliance related): July 2006

ELV End of Life Vehicle (Automotive Related): July 2007

The European Union (EU) has been concerned that certain substances find their way into the drinking water once certain products are discarded in land fills. To address this they came out with two directives. The End of Life Vehicle (ELV) directive relates to automobiles; the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive covers a broad array of products including large and small household appliances, radios, TVs, video recorders, lighting equipment, electronic tools and electric light bulbs.

Both of these directives essentially mean the same thing. Whatever cars are produced by July 2007 and whatever products that fall under the RoHS directive produced by July 2006 must be free of the following substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and the flame retardants polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) used in plastics.

The only substance that affects retaining rings under both directives is hexavalent chromium (our ZD, ZF, ZDL and HZDL coatings). We do offer a trivalent coating, which is hexavalent-free and complies with the directives. Please note that substitution of our trivalent finish for hexavalent chromium is subject to issuance and acceptance of a new quotation (see below for more information).

HEXAVALENT FREE CORROSION PROTECTION ALTERNATIVES FOR ROTOR CLIP RETAINING RINGS
(FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE ROHS AND ELV EUROPEAN UNION DIRECTIVES)

  • Trivalent Finish (Z3X) - Salt Spray - 96 hours to white corrosion; 240 hours to red corrosion (Plating thickness is .0008 - .0012)
  • HOW MUCH CORROSION PROTECTION DO YOU REALLY NEED?

Review your application to determine if one of the following LOWER COST ALTERNATIVES can suit your needs at far less the price.

    1. Phosphate and Oil (PD) - SALT SPRAY - 8 HOURS TO RED RUST
    2. Heavy Phosphate and Oil - SALT SPRAY - 72 HOURS TO RED RUST

    REVIEW YOUR APPLICATION CAREFULLY

You may be using our ZD/ZF coatings for color coding instead of corrosion protection. You can realize substantial savings by switching to either copper flash (CF), which gives the part a copper color, or zinc flash (ZFF), which gives the parts a silver color. (NOTE: NEITHER FINISH OFFERS ANY CORROSION PROTECTION)

We are currently working on more efficient ways to apply our trivalent coating that will eventually lower the cost of this finish as well.
